I was a little intrigued today by an email from a member pointing out a clause in the terms and conditions of the British Columbia competition. The clause in question was simply 8. If there is a dispute as to the identity of an entrant, the Promoter reserves the
right, in its sole discretion, to determine the identity of the entrant.

The member thought that it was a great thing that a promoter is taking the trouble to weed out multiple entrants using different names. I agree with his sentiment.

One of the most important factors of competitions is the degree of fairness applied by the promoter. Single entry for free competitions is in my view fair, however as anyone would know it's easy to have 100 identities if we wish, on hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc.

Competitions Guide limits entries to one per person or household. We have software in place that seeks out same addresses, postcodes, phone numbers, and will advise an entrant that they have entered prior.

I would like to see these same techniques applied for all competitions, however it's great to see a promoter making the effort to ascertain the genuineness of a winner, particularly for a big prize.

Why do comps allow unlimited entries?
Hi Craig,
Why do some comps allow unlimited entries? I don't see the point - why not just make it one entry per person/email? In those comps, winning comes down to how much time you are prepared to spend entering (hardly fair) or to those who use software to create multiple entries (or so I've read). I don't even bother to enter these types of comps any more, unless it's a really good prize.
