Games people play

Something struck me yesterday (no, not a bulldozer :) in terms of games being used as part of a competition. When I refer to games, I'm talking more about those in which you have to look for clues, take part in trivia or anything that requires skills not typical of a words-or-less competition.

The strange thing I find is that it's more airline competitions that require this than anything else. I understand that website owners like to have people spending a large amount of time becoming acquainted with their services, and this could lead to a sale .... that's fairly straightforward.

But the question I ask, is why airlines in particular. Why not car rental agencies, or brands of cereal?

In my consultancy days I would have been likely to advise customers against games as a method of entry on the basis of a massive reduction of entries (I'm assuming, so don't take this as gospel). Remember, the theory is that the more an entrant has to do, the less likely they will go through with the process.

Whatever the case it must be working for the airlines, either that or they are copying each other because they presume it's working for the others .......

Will find out and get back to you.
