Losing and winning's fine line

A few years ago I was helping to teach my daughter to drive. As you'd find in traffic anywhere, there's a particular intersection that would drive me crazy. It's a right hand turn that has the capacity of banking up, yet the lights tend to turn orange within seconds of green, and only about 8-10 cars get let through depending on the speed of take-off of the drivers in front.

This can be frustrating, and sometimes the wait can be anything up to three light phases before turning the corner. And nothing worse than the feeling that you just may make it this time, and then missing out by one car.

On this occasion we were about 10 cars from the light and would be an each way bet to make the next turn. My daughter commented that the car at the very front was extremely lucky.

True, I thought, but in the same way this same driver was probably cursing the fact that a few minutes ago they could have made it but just missed out. But, now they were in the box seat.

There's no huge point to the story, but I just found it interesting how someone can consider they've lost one second, and won the next, even if nothing's really changed.

Sometimes a win can just be a matter of good timing .......
