How competitive are we really?

Are those of us involved in competitions naturally competitive? After all, to take part in competitions is by definition to compete, but I wonder if this is really part of our personality. I have a pointless mind game that I like to play with myself, but to give you some background first.

I take a train to get to my office, and to do so requires me to get off at Town Hall Station in Sydney. To those of you that haven't been to Town Hall station, peak hour is nothing like those you see in Japan, but it's a struggle to get out of the station.

The blockage is a steep escalator from Platform 1, of which two trainloads of human cattle are dumped, and expected to funnel their way through. If things go well, I can usually get into the first 50 or so meaning a relatively smooth ride to the top, but sometimes I'm way back, and this can add ten whopping minutes to my trip.

I've always secretly wondered what it would be like to be first on the escalator. Two weeks ago, timing and pure luck combined to give me a shot. With the finish line in sight, my 6'3" frame barreled one or two people to get to my goal, but hey, I got there.

Being first on the escalator proved to be kind of .... boring. But, it was a secret race that I wonder how many others on the platform try for. This time, I won.

Who said "Craig Seitam doesn't enter competitions"?

Told you it was pointless ......
